UK Skilled Worker visa — social worker
Verify firstSocial work is a degree-level profession and generally sits above the RQF 6 threshold introduced in July 2025, but eligibility is decided by occupation code and the lists have changed repeatedly. Confirm your exact code on the official list before planning around it.
-
Already in the UK with work rights
OpenNo visa step, but you still cannot practise or use the title without registering with the relevant regulator for the nation you work in.
What you need before applying
- Registration with Social Work England, or the equivalent regulator in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland — the title is protected and you cannot practise without it.
- An assessed and recognised social work qualification; overseas qualifications go through a separate registration route.
- Enhanced DBS check, and evidence of continuing professional development.
Where to find the jobs
Go to these directly. Applying at the source beats applying through a reposting aggregator, and the official registers let you verify an employer before you commit anything.
-
Social Work England
Registration, including the route for internationally qualified social workers.
-
UK register of licensed sponsors
Local authorities and private providers who can sponsor. Check before committing to anything.
-
Jobs Go Public
Widely used by UK councils, which are the largest employers of social workers.
What your social worker CV must show
- State your registration status and registration number, or where you are in the international route.
- Name your practice area precisely: children and families, adult safeguarding, mental health, fostering, youth offending.
- Evidence statutory experience — court work, child protection conferences, Care Act assessments — by name.
- Give caseload numbers and the legal frameworks you have worked under. UK employers read for these specifically.
Write it now. Open the nurse example in the builder and replace the details with your own. It saves in your browser — no account, nothing uploaded.
Social worker in United Kingdom — FAQ
Can I register before I have a job offer?
Yes, and you generally should. Registration takes months and most employers will not progress an application far without it, so running it in parallel with your job search saves real time.
Does my overseas social work degree count?
It is assessed individually through the international registration route rather than recognised automatically. Some applicants are asked to complete additional requirements before registration is granted.
Who actually employs social workers in the UK?
Mostly local authorities, plus the NHS, fostering and adoption agencies, charities and private providers. Councils advertise largely through their own sites and public-sector boards rather than general job boards.
Is agency work a way in?
It is common and often better paid, but agencies usually require existing registration and UK experience, and far fewer of them hold sponsor licences. For a first UK role, a permanent council post is normally the more realistic target.
