Learnerships and entry-level jobs in South Africa

Learnerships are the main route from school into paid work in South Africa, combining a stipend with an accredited qualification. Competition is heavy and most applications fail on paperwork rather than on merit.

Which routes are open

Status reflects the official position at the time of writing. Rules change often — follow each link and confirm before you act on it.

  • SETA-accredited learnership

    Open

Structured learning plus workplace experience, leading to a registered NQF qualification. Employers recruit directly or through their sector SETA. A stipend is paid; it is not an unpaid internship.

  • Youth Employment Service (YES)

    Open

12-month paid work placements for 18–35 year olds, run with participating employers.

What you need before applying

  • Certified copies of your ID and matric certificate — most rejections are for missing or uncertified documents.
  • Proof of residence and, for some programmes, a SARS tax number.
  • Check the NQF level required before applying; applying below or above wastes a slot.

Where to find the jobs

Go to these directly. Applying at the source beats applying through a reposting aggregator, and the official registers let you verify an employer before you commit anything.

What your learnerships and entry-level CV must show

  • With no work history, lead with education, subjects and results — these are what selectors actually score.
  • Include school leadership, sports, church, volunteering and family responsibilities. They evidence reliability.
  • Keep it to one page and put your phone number and email at the top, correctly typed.
  • Name the specific learnership in a short covering line. Generic applications are filtered out first.

Learnerships and entry-level in South Africa — FAQ

Do learnerships pay?

Yes. A stipend is required — amounts vary by SETA and NQF level. Any "learnership" asking you to pay a fee is not a learnership.

Can I apply with a matric certificate only?

Yes, many learnerships are designed for exactly that. Check the NQF level stated in the advert and confirm your subjects meet it.

How do I avoid learnership scams?

Legitimate programmes never charge application fees, never ask for banking details before an offer, and are run by a named employer or SETA you can look up independently.

What happens after the learnership ends?

You keep the NQF qualification regardless. Some employers absorb learners into permanent roles and many do not, so treat the qualification and the reference as the guaranteed outcome and a job offer as the bonus.
