Software Engineer resume example

Engineering managers skim for three things: the stack you actually shipped with, the scale you worked at, and evidence that your code changed a number someone cared about. A strong software engineer resume names systems, not buzzwords, and ties each project to latency, reliability, cost or users.

Your resume stays on your device.

9 strong software engineer bullet points

Each one opens with an action verb and ends with a result. Adapt the structure; swap in your own numbers.

  • Reduced p95 checkout API latency from 820 ms to 190 ms by adding a Redis read-through cache and removing N+1 queries across 14 endpoints.
  • Migrated a 9-year-old monolith billing module to an event-driven service, cutting month-end invoice failures by 87% with zero downtime.
  • Built a feature-flag service adopted by 11 product teams, enabling 40+ gradual rollouts per month and halving rollback time.
  • Automated end-to-end regression tests with Playwright, raising coverage of critical flows from 35% to 92% and catching 23 release blockers in one quarter.
  • Designed a multi-tenant permissions model in PostgreSQL row-level security that passed an external SOC 2 audit with no findings.
  • Cut monthly AWS spend by $18,400 (31%) by right-sizing ECS tasks, moving cold logs to S3 Glacier and removing 60 idle resources.
  • Mentored 4 junior engineers through structured code reviews and pairing; 3 were promoted within 18 months.
  • Led the on-call rotation redesign, reducing pages per week from 26 to 7 through alert deduplication and runbooks for the top 15 incidents.
  • Shipped an offline-first React Native sync engine that kept field technicians productive in low-signal areas, lifting daily job completions by 18%.

Software Engineer summary examples

Experienced

Senior backend engineer with 8 years building payment and logistics platforms in Go and TypeScript. Specialises in turning fragile monoliths into observable, well-tested services, and has led migrations handling 3M+ requests per day. Known for clear design documents and for mentoring engineers into on-call confidence.

Mid-level

Full-stack engineer with 4 years of experience shipping React and Node.js products used by 200,000 monthly users. Comfortable owning a feature from database schema to UI, writing the tests that keep it working, and measuring its impact after launch.

Entry-level

Computer science graduate with two internships and three deployed side projects in TypeScript and Python. Built a course-scheduling app used by 1,200 students and contributed fixes to an open-source testing library. Eager to grow on a team that values code review and steady, shippable increments.

Tips for writing a software engineer resume

Name the stack per role

Recruiters filter by technology, so put the languages and infrastructure next to each job rather than only in a skills list. A short line such as “Stack: Go, PostgreSQL, Kafka, AWS” under the job title tells the reader exactly what you used where.

Measure the system, not the effort

Replace “worked on performance improvements” with the metric that moved: latency, error rate, cost, deploy frequency or conversion. If you do not have exact numbers, use honest approximations from dashboards or tickets and be ready to explain them.

Link to code you are proud of

Add a GitHub or portfolio link in the header and point to one or two repositories with a clear README. A small, well-tested project is more convincing than a dozen half-finished tutorials.

Show scope and ownership

Mention team size, number of services, traffic or data volume so the reader can gauge the level. Phrases like “owned”, “led the design of” or “was on-call for” signal seniority better than job titles alone.

Keep it to one or two pages

Older roles and early-career technologies can shrink to a single line each. Engineering hiring managers rarely read past page two, so put your most relevant system work first.

Software Engineer resume FAQ

Should a software engineer resume include a skills section if the stack is already in each job?

Yes. Applicant tracking systems and recruiters often search the skills section first, so a compact, grouped list (languages, frameworks, cloud, tooling) helps you get matched. Keep it honest: only list tools you could discuss in an interview.

How do I write bullets for work that was mostly maintenance or bug fixing?

Group the work and describe the outcome: “Resolved 120+ production bugs in the order service, reducing support tickets by 35%.” Maintenance that improves stability, cost or developer speed is valuable and measurable.

Do side projects belong on a professional engineer’s resume?

Include them when they show skills your jobs do not, such as a language you want to move into or a product you built end to end. Give each one a link, a one-line description and one or two results, like users or stars.

Should I list LeetCode rankings or coding challenge scores?

Usually not. Hiring teams care more about shipped work, design decisions and collaboration. A competitive programming achievement can go in a custom section if it is genuinely notable, such as a regional final.

How technical should the summary be?

Name your specialty and primary stack in the first sentence, then one outcome that shows scale. Avoid listing ten technologies; the summary should tell the reader what kind of engineer you are, and the skills section handles the rest.
