Tips for writing a teacher resume

Lead with certification and subject

Put your teaching licence, state, grade bands and endorsements in a clear section near the top. Many districts screen by certification before reading anything else.

Show student outcomes, not just duties

Every teacher plans lessons and grades work. Stand out by stating results such as reading-level growth, pass rates, attendance or the number of students in an intervention group you led.

Mirror the school’s language

If the posting mentions a specific framework, such as project-based learning, restorative practices or a particular curriculum, use the same terms in your bullets where they honestly apply.

Include extracurricular leadership

Clubs, coaching, committees and grants show commitment beyond the classroom. Give each one a line with a concrete result.

Teacher resume FAQ

Should I include student teaching on my resume?

Yes, especially if you have less than three years of classroom experience. Treat it like a job: list the school, grade, subject and dates, then two or three bullets about the units you taught and the results.

How do I show results when test scores are not available?

Use other measurable signs of learning: reading levels, benchmark assessments, rubric scores, project completion, attendance or fewer behaviour referrals. Even a before-and-after comparison for one class is useful.

Do teachers need a summary or an objective?

A short summary works better than an objective because it tells the principal what you bring rather than what you want. Mention your certification, grade level, years of experience and one strength that matches the school.

Should I list every professional development workshop?

No. Pick the three to five most relevant trainings, such as literacy programmes, special education strategies or technology certifications, and leave out one-hour sessions that every teacher attends.

How long should a teacher resume be?

One page is ideal for new teachers and two pages is fine for experienced educators with leadership roles. Many districts also ask for a separate cover letter and teaching philosophy, so the resume can stay focused.
