Nurse managers and HR screeners check credentials first: active licence, state, BLS/ACLS and your specialty unit. After that they look for patient ratios, acuity, and evidence of safety, teamwork and calm under pressure. A good nurse resume makes those facts easy to find in seconds.

Tips for writing a nurse resume

Put licensure where it cannot be missed

List your RN licence with state (or compact status) and expiry date near the top or in a dedicated Licensure section. Many hospitals reject applications automatically if the licence is not visible.

Name the unit, beds and ratio

A line such as “32-bed med-surg unit, 1:5 ratio” instantly tells a nurse manager your pace and acuity. Add the facility type too, for example Magnet hospital, Level I trauma centre or long-term care.

Quantify safety and quality

Falls, infection rates, readmissions, HCAHPS scores and medication accuracy are numbers hospitals track closely. If you sat on a committee or led a change that moved one of them, put it in a bullet.

Keep certifications current and dated

Show BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC or specialty certifications with the issuing body and expiry year. An expired certification is better removed than left without a date.

New grads: treat clinicals like experience

List your capstone or preceptorship with the unit, hours and patient load. Add relevant prior work such as nursing assistant or patient care technician roles to show bedside experience.

Registered Nurse resume FAQ

Should I include my nursing licence number on my resume?

Listing the licence type, state and expiry is standard; the number itself is optional because employers verify it through the board of nursing. If a job posting asks for the number, include it, otherwise “RN, Ohio, active through 2027” is enough.

How do I list multiple nursing specialties without looking unfocused?

Lead with the specialty that matches the job and order your skills to match it. Keep other units in your experience but give them fewer bullets, focusing on transferable strengths like assessment, telemetry or patient education.

Do travel nurses need to list every contract?

Group contracts under one heading such as “Travel Registered Nurse, Agency Name” and list each assignment as a short line with hospital type, unit, city and dates. This keeps the resume short while showing adaptability across facilities.

What should a new graduate nurse put in the summary?

Mention your degree, licence status (or NCLEX date), total clinical hours and the area you want to work in. One concrete detail, such as managing a full assignment during your capstone, makes the summary memorable.

Is a two-page resume acceptable for nurses?

Yes, for nurses with several years of experience, multiple specialties or significant certifications. New graduates should aim for a single page that highlights clinical rotations, certifications and any patient care work.
