Accountant resume example

Finance managers look for accuracy, speed and control. A strong accountant resume shows how fast you close the books, how large and complex the ledgers were, which systems you used and how you strengthened controls or audit results. Credentials such as CPA or ACCA status belong near the top.

Tips for writing a accountant resume

Put credentials beside your name

Add CPA, ACCA, CIMA or CMA after your name and list the licence or membership in a certifications section. If you are partway through an exam, say which sections you have passed and your expected completion date.

Describe the size and complexity

Company revenue, number of entities, currencies and accounts give context to your work. Reconciling 40 accounts for a $200M multinational is a different job from bookkeeping for a single shop.

Show speed and accuracy together

Close timelines, audit adjustments, error rates and penalties avoided are the clearest proof of quality. Pair them so the reader sees you are fast and reliable.

Name your systems

Finance teams are often tied to a specific ERP. List the accounting software, consolidation tools and Excel skills you actually use, and mention any implementation projects.

Accountant resume FAQ

Should I list the CPA exam if I have not passed every section?

Yes. Write “CPA candidate — passed FAR and AUD, expected licensure 2026” so employers know your progress. Many firms support candidates with study time, so it can work in your favour.

How do I quantify accounting work that is mostly routine?

Count what you handle and how well: number of accounts reconciled, invoices processed per month, days to close, and errors or audit adjustments. Routine work done accurately at volume is exactly what employers need.

Is it worth listing Excel skills separately?

Yes, but be specific. “Advanced Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query, macros” is more convincing than “proficient in Microsoft Office”, and it helps with keyword searches.

What is the difference between a staff and senior accountant resume?

A staff accountant resume focuses on execution: reconciliations, entries and AP/AR volume. A senior accountant resume should add ownership of the close, review of others’ work, audit leadership and process improvements.

Should I mention confidential financial figures?

Use ranges or public figures rather than confidential numbers. Phrases such as “$150–200M revenue company” give the scale without disclosing anything sensitive.
