Data Analyst resume example

Analytics managers want proof that you can get from a messy question to a decision: the data you used, the method you chose and what changed because of it. A strong data analyst resume names the exact stack (SQL dialect, Python libraries, BI tool) and quantifies the business impact of your analysis, not just the dashboards you built.

Your resume stays on your device.

Tips for writing a data analyst resume

Name your exact stack

Write “SQL (PostgreSQL, BigQuery)” and “Python (pandas, scikit-learn)” rather than just “SQL, Python”. Recruiters search for specific tools, and the detail shows you have used them on real work.

Quantify the decision, not the dashboard

A dashboard is an output; the impact is what someone did with it. Lead with money saved, hours freed, accuracy gained or a decision your analysis changed, then mention the tool.

Add a projects section if your job title undersells you

If your title is “Reporting Analyst” or you are switching careers, two or three projects with public data show what you can do. Link to a write-up or notebook and describe the question, method and finding in one or two bullets each.

Keep it dense but scannable

Analysts often have many tools and projects to list. A compact layout with grouped skills keeps everything on one page, but leave enough white space that each bullet still reads as one clear result.

Data Analyst resume FAQ

Do data analysts need a portfolio or GitHub link?

It is not required if your work history clearly shows analysis impact, but it helps a lot for juniors and career changers. Link to two or three well-documented projects with a short write-up; hiring managers rarely read raw code but do read clear summaries.

Which certifications matter for a data analyst?

Certifications help most early in your career or when changing fields. Tool-specific ones such as Tableau or Power BI certifications and broad analytics certificates are recognised, but they never replace evidence of real analysis in your bullets.

How technical should my resume be?

Technical enough to pass a keyword screen, but written so a business manager understands the outcome. Use a short skills section for tools and methods, and keep bullets focused on the question, the approach and the result.

Should I include Excel on a data analyst resume?

Yes, if the role mentions it, and be specific: Power Query, pivot tables, lookups and modelling. Many analyst roles still rely on Excel alongside SQL and BI tools, and leaving it out can cost you keyword matches.

What if my results are confidential?

Use percentages, ranges or relative changes instead of exact figures, for example “cut reporting time by about 80%”. You can also describe scale, such as the number of records, users or regions covered, without revealing sensitive numbers.
