Aged care worker jobs in Australia

Most aged care searching in Australia comes from people already in the country, and for them this is a straightforward, high-demand field with a short qualification path. Sponsorship exists too, but runs through a narrower door than most job adverts suggest.

Which routes are open

Status reflects the official position at the time of writing. Rules change often — follow each link and confirm before you act on it.

  • Already in Australia (citizen, PR, or with work rights)

    Open

No visa step. A Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) plus a police check and NDIS screening is the usual entry point, and many providers will hire while you study.

  • Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement (ACILA)

    Open

The main sponsorship route, covering Aged or Disabled Carer, Nursing Support Worker and Personal Care Assistant. The employer must already be endorsed under ACILA — endorsement attaches to the business, not to you. Leads to a 482 visa and a PR pathway after two years.

What you need before applying

  • Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) — the standard entry qualification.
  • National police check and, for disability work, NDIS Worker Screening.
  • First aid and CPR, usually required and usually renewed annually.

Where to find the jobs

Go to these directly. Applying at the source beats applying through a reposting aggregator, and the official registers let you verify an employer before you commit anything.

What your aged care worker CV must show

  • Put your Certificate III and clearances at the top — they are pass/fail screening criteria.
  • Describe the care setting: residential, home care, dementia-specific, palliative.
  • Show reliability concretely: shift patterns worked, years with one employer, availability.
  • Include any manual handling, medication assistance or behaviour support training by name.

Write it now. Open the nurse example in the builder and replace the details with your own. It saves in your browser — no account, nothing uploaded.

Aged care worker in Australia — FAQ

Can I get sponsored for aged care from overseas?

Only through an employer already endorsed under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement. Most aged care employers are not endorsed, so the pool is much smaller than job adverts imply. Verify endorsement before paying any fee to anyone.

Do I need Certificate III before applying?

Not always. Some providers hire and fund the qualification, particularly where demand is high. Say on your CV if you are currently enrolled.

Is aged care the same as disability support?

They overlap and many workers do both, but disability work requires NDIS Worker Screening and some roles need different competencies. Listing both widens your options.

Does aged care lead to permanent residence?

It can. The labour agreement route includes a pathway to employer-nominated PR after two years with the sponsor, but it depends on continuing to meet the nomination requirements, so treat it as a possibility rather than a promise.
