Student resume example

When you have no formal work history, employers hiring for internships and entry-level roles look for potential: how you learn, whether you follow through, and how you work with others. A strong student resume puts education first and treats class projects, clubs, volunteering and side hustles like real jobs, with clear results.

Tips for writing a student resume

Put education first

With little work history, your degree or diploma is your strongest credential. List the school, qualification and expected graduation date, then add honours and 3–5 courses that relate to the job.

Include your GPA only if it helps

A GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or higher, or the local equivalent such as a first or upper second, is worth including. If it is lower, leave it out and let projects and activities speak for you.

Treat projects and clubs like jobs

Give each project or activity a title, dates and one or two bullets with a result. “Managed a $3,500 club budget” shows the same responsibility an employer looks for in a job.

Keep it to one page

Recruiters expect a single page from students. Cut high school details once you are at university, unless they include a standout achievement, and use the space for your best recent work.

Use a professional email address

Create a simple address based on your name if your current one is a nickname. It is a small detail, but it is often the first thing a recruiter sees.

Student resume FAQ

How do I write a resume with no work experience?

Lead with education, then add projects, volunteering, clubs, sports and side hustles, describing each like a job with a short result. Finish with a skills section that lists software and practical abilities you can prove, such as Excel, social media or customer service.

Should I include my GPA on a student resume?

Include it if it is strong (roughly 3.5/4.0 or higher, or your country’s equivalent) or if the employer asks for it. Otherwise leave it out; dean’s list mentions or scholarships can show academic strength instead.

Should I include high school on a university resume?

Usually not after your first year at university, because your degree has replaced it. Keep it only if you have a notable achievement from that time, such as a national award or a leadership role directly relevant to the job.

What skills can a student put on a resume?

List concrete skills you have used: spreadsheet tools, design apps, a programming language, a second language, cash handling or event planning. Back them up in your project or activity bullets so they do not look like an unverified list.

Is a summary or objective necessary for a student resume?

A two- or three-sentence summary is useful because it tells the employer what you are studying, what you are good at and what kind of role you want. Tailor the last sentence to each application, for example naming the internship or department.
