Construction and skilled trades jobs in UK and Australia

Construction sponsorship is real but uneven: some trades sit above the skill threshold and some fall below it, and the answer changes by occupation code rather than by job title. Check the code, not the advert.

Which routes are open

Status reflects the official position at the time of writing. Rules change often — follow each link and confirm before you act on it.

  • UK Skilled Worker visa

    Verify first

Site management, quantity surveying and civil engineering roles generally qualify. Many hands-on trades sit below the graduate-level skill threshold and do not. Eligibility is decided by occupation code, so look yours up before planning around it.

  • Australia Skills in Demand (subclass 482)

    Verify first

Australia lists more hands-on trades than the UK does, but most require a formal skills assessment through a body such as TRA before a nomination can proceed.

What you need before applying

  • UK: a CSCS card for site access, plus any trade-specific certification (CPCS, NVQ).
  • Australia: a Trades Recognition Australia skills assessment for most trades, plus a White Card for site access.
  • Document your qualifications in the destination country's terms, not only your own country's.

Where to find the jobs

Go to these directly. Applying at the source beats applying through a reposting aggregator, and the official registers let you verify an employer before you commit anything.

What your construction and skilled trades CV must show

  • List cards, tickets and licences before anything else — they gate site access and get checked first.
  • Name project types and values: commercial fit-out, highways, residential, and the contract size.
  • Include machinery and systems you are certified on, by name and certification body.
  • State your availability and whether you hold a driving licence valid in the destination country.

Write it now. Open the project manager example in the builder and replace the details with your own. It saves in your browser — no account, nothing uploaded.

Construction and skilled trades in UK and Australia — FAQ

Can a general labourer get sponsored?

In the UK, generally no — labouring falls below the skill threshold. Australia lists more trades but requires a skills assessment. Be wary of any advert promising sponsorship for unskilled site work.

Does my home-country qualification transfer?

Rarely automatically. Both countries run recognition processes, and starting that process early is usually the single biggest time saver.

Do I need a job offer first?

For both the UK Skilled Worker route and the Australian 482, yes — these are employer-sponsored visas. There is no general construction work visa you can apply for alone.

How long does a skills assessment take?

For Australia, allow two to four months for a trades assessment, longer if a practical component is required. It is usually the slowest step, so start it before you begin applying rather than after you get interest.
