Which routes are open
Status reflects the official position at the time of writing. Rules change often — follow each link and confirm before you act on it.
-
UK Skilled Worker visa
OpenProfessional engineering occupations are degree-level and sit above the RQF 6 threshold that has applied since July 2025. You need a licensed sponsor and a salary at or above the going rate for your occupation code.
-
Australia Skills in Demand (subclass 482)
OpenMost engineering disciplines appear on the Core Skills Occupation List. A skills assessment through Engineers Australia is normally required before nomination.
-
Germany EU Blue Card
OpenEngineering is treated as a shortage occupation, which carries a lower salary threshold than the standard Blue Card floor. Thresholds were raised in January 2026, so confirm the current figure before planning around it.
What you need before applying
- Qualification recognition: Engineers Australia for Australia, and anabin assessment for Germany. Start this months before you apply.
- Chartered or professional status (CEng, CPEng) is not usually required but materially strengthens an application.
- English at the level the route requires; the UK raised its requirement to B2 in January 2026.
Where to find the jobs
Go to these directly. Applying at the source beats applying through a reposting aggregator, and the official registers let you verify an employer before you commit anything.
-
UK register of licensed sponsors
Filter for engineering consultancies and contractors, then apply to them directly.
-
Engineers Australia — skills assessment
The gateway for most Australian engineering nominations.
-
Make it in Germany — job listings
Official portal including Blue Card eligible engineering roles.
What your engineering CV must show
- Name your discipline and the standards or codes you work to — Eurocode, AS/NZS, IEC. Recruiters search on them.
- Quantify projects by value, duration and your specific scope, not the whole team’s.
- List software by name: AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, ETAP, MATLAB, whatever applies.
- State your recognition status plainly — assessment submitted, in progress, or complete.
Write it now. Open the project manager example in the builder and replace the details with your own. It saves in your browser — no account, nothing uploaded.
Engineering in UK, Australia and Germany — FAQ
Do I need chartership to get sponsored?
No. Sponsorship depends on the job, the sponsor and the salary, not on your professional title. Chartership helps you win the offer, which is the actual hard part.
How long does Engineers Australia assessment take?
Typically several months, and longer if you are assessed via the competency demonstration report route. It is usually the critical path, so begin it before you start applying.
Is Germany realistic without German?
In large engineering firms and international teams, often yes. For site-based and public-sector work, rarely. Even basic German widens the pool substantially.
Which discipline has the best odds?
Civil and structural track infrastructure spending, electrical tracks energy and grid work, and all three markets are currently investing in both. Software-adjacent engineering competes with the much larger tech sponsorship pool.
